Hey guys,

I just celebrated my 21st birdthday yesterday night with my buddies!! *Yesh*. No pics yet, because I have again been forced to use my friend's camera. Well, at circa 6.30 pm we rendezvous-ed near school and our drive of the day, Mr. Kin Sing drove us down to the joint he claimed to be 'superb', 'oo-la-la', 'marvelosso' and all that!

We arrived at almost 7 pm and to our amazement (after we took our seats at the best table in the room), the place filled up preeeety fast! I nudged my friends to stop being shy and start ordering. It's not that they were on a blind date or something; just 5 guys hanging out for dinner with the inclusion of a birthday CAKE! <-- Sincerely I never thought they would take the time to go out and order a cake with my name on it. KUDOS!!

We had some pretty decent food: lamb chops, chicken chops, sirloin steaks, escargot (18 units, haha), AAAND --> wait for it, wait for it, sizzling nasi lemak @_@?

Before we sunk our teeth into the food and munch it down our guts, we took pictures of the pure, untouched food that lay delicately on the table. YEP! We did just to boast them around our other friends who could/would/can not show up yesterday.

At the end of it, we took out the cake and planted the fireworks candles (2 long ones and 1 short one, why can't they be 21 short ones tho?). They were so noisy like crows but when it came to part for them to show off their singing talents, more than one of them were too shy. Instead, I had to sing my own song!! The best part: other tables clapped to compensate Ming's (remember this name) lack of enthusiasm. Ming I didn't see you so shy when you gobbled up that Chicken Maryland!

We hung around for a bit and it was time for yours only, Adrian Lai, to cough up cash to pay the bill. It didn't come to much, just RM 120.90 for 5 people! I was never really a scrooge but I'm satisfied with myself ^_^

All in all, everything was great but there weren't any chicks! AHHH that's what you get for making friends with bachelors.

Cheers!

Hey all,

After watching Videograms of a Revolution by Harun Farouki and Andrej Ujica, I was shocked to learn about an historical event that I had never heard of. These particularly violent string of events occured in Bucharest towards the end of Communist rule in the Eastern bloc. The Romanian president of that time, Nicolae Ceausescu, was guilty of 25 years of corruption and apathy towards his own country. After a successful coup, Nicolae and his wife Elena were summarily executed by firing squad.

Moments after watching this eye-opening documentary about the Romanian Revolution of 1989, my fellow coursemates and I were instructed to write about how television played a pivotal part in the week-long bloody uprising. So here we go:

First of all, it was interesting to note that state television was used both by Nicolae and the prostestors as an important media vehicle; a channel used to convey messages and information to their 'receivers', the masses. Nicolae frequently used the TV station as his main tool of spreading socialist propaganda. However, the airing of his last mass rally that was disrupted by the cracks of gunfire by the Securitate, signalled the beginning of the revolution the end of his dictatorship.

Nicolae's last speech on state TV

Eventual leaders of the new regime also utilised television, albeit differently, as a means of delivering the 'truth' and to inform the population that liberation had been achieved. With the old communist government overthrown, the National Salvation Front (FSN) needed the media and the military as important allies to help establish a new order in the country, a democratic one.

People marching in the streets of Bucharest

Besides announcing the victorious march to Palace Square, the occupation of the Central Committee building and the fleeing of Nicolae and his underlings, the dissidents used television as a stage to exhibit the enemies of the state, including Nicu Ceausescu, Nicolae's son and a bloodied man who was accused of trying to sneak into the TV station and assassinate the leaders responsible for the coup.

The protestors

Television crew was also rushed to the scene where millions of people celebrated the fall of Nicolae and the re-birth of their beloved country in Palace Square. In order to assure the millions of people glued to their television screens of absolute victory, television helped spread the cheer to countless households across the nation by broadcasting scenes of people waving the Romanian flag with its coat of arms torn of cut off, not to mention speeches made by the revolutionaries standing on the podium where Nicolae used to make his own.

Victory!

When 'terrorist forces', armed units still loyal to Nicolae attacked the vital points of socio-political life: the television, radio, and telephone buildings, the prostestors holed up in the TV station were quick to react by urging the public not to worry and stated that the 'army will protect us'. When Bucharest practically turned into a warzone, state television aired scenes where soldiers were fighting valiantly against subversive elements with the aid of civilians, thus boosting the morale of countless others who barricaded themselves at home.

The military and the people

After hostilities finally ended on 27th December 1989, the new and improved Românǎ de Televiziune (TVR) run by the new regime took the opportunity to parade their most valuable catches to date: Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu themselves! After failing to flee the country, they were caught by the people and the military and tried in a kangaroo court. After conviction and execution, their corpses were filmed and aired live to every working televsion set in Romania to the delight of everyone who was watching. They applauded the deaths of the infamous couple and hoped that the new year would usher in a prosperous new future for all Romanians and generations to come.

Working together against the enemy

In conclusion, television in Romania during that volatile period was totally different from the one we are used to watching. There were no rehearsed scripts, no actors, no propaganda for that matter. Only the truth was shown the moment communism collapsed in the impoverished state; the moment when that helicopted took off carrying Nicolae and Elena with it. All in all, television gave the opportunity to Romanians to be a part of history and to feel for themselves what it meant to be free once more from the grip of tyranny. For the millions more who did not take to streets of Bucharest, it did not mean they could not sing and cheer together with those who fought and died in the name of democracy. That, my friends, could not have been made possible without the help of television.

Nicolae takes flight

Hey guys,

So here's the result of the vox pop I worked on. Before that let me explain the process of coming up to the question and the strategy I used to collect vital information from the responses.

Vox Pop

Issue: UCSI's Reputation Among its Current Students
Formulated question: Would you encourage your friends to come study at UCSI? Why?
Gathered responses: 7

Notes: I wanted to gather opinions from current UCSI students about how they really felt about the institution. Their responses would actually reflect UCSI's general reputation and gauge of whether it succeeded in providing quality education for them. In order to obtain satsifactory and sincere answers, however, I was required to pose a question that would not be too direct as in "In your opinion, how is UCSI's reputation currently?"

Therefore, I figured that I could achieve my goal by asking a 'round-about' question and still receive well thought out answers from the respondents.

Response 1:

Well, I would say that UCSI would cater more to the locals since everyone can fit in nicely whereas it would be a hindrance for my foreign friends as they would they have to deal with the language, social and cultural barriers.

Response 2:

I must say no because UCSI is definitely a profit-oriented organisation which puts money first, education second. Behind this façade lies a capatalist company that practically ‘sucks’ the money out of everyone with its insane fees.

Response 3:

Yes I always encourage my friends from Indonesia to come study in UCSI because it is undeniable that UCSI is very experienced in certain courses and provides undergraduates with the opportunity to apply their knowledge by working via the co-operative placement program.

Response 4:

I would have to say no in the strongest sense of the word because of just one thing; the unbelievably high costs students have to deal with throughout their education. I am certain that UCSI is the only college that charges students RM 200 for a resit/supplementary paper.

Response 5:

If you asked me this question when I was a junior, I would have said yes. Now, however, UCSI is quickly losing its prestige with its mediocre administration and fails in its attempt to rebrand itself; even newer colleges like New Era is fast catching up in the competition.

Response 6:

I would be doing my friends back in Botswana a huge favour by telling them not to come to UCSI, ever. Besides the language barrier between the lecturer and the foreign students, I find it difficult to tolerate the cold treatment by the locals in the campus especially when black students try to socialize with them.

Response 7:

I would not encourage my friends to come here unless they have no other choice. The school is charging too much for substandard campus facilities such as the run-down PC lab and rusty gym equipment. I also think that the attendance system the school applies is ridiculous; students should have the right to choose whether to attend classes or not as they are young adults.

In a nutshell, only one respondent talked in favour of UCSI. The rest made very unsatisfactory remarks about the university, touching on a range of issues and problems faced by them everyday including the fees, facilities, school system and cultural barriers. I believe I have successfully captured their emotions in words as they talk passionately about what is really going on UCSI, plain and simple.
Cheers,
LaD

Hello,

The purpose of this entry is to furnish you guys with information oh how verocious I am as a consumer of everyday news, or not. Well, I guess I had better start from the very beginning. Of course, like any other child, life in the beginning was carefree and the news on TV never did left any impression on me. However, that would soon change.

My first piece of news that I could never forget came was when I was nine. The year was 1997 and the haze from the forest fires in Sumatra was getting on everybody's nerves. The situation was desperate. The public's health badly deteriorated and I will never forget the small details like how I used to wear face masks to school and how we could all skip PE lessons and play in class instead. I now realise that I became more attentive to the news then because it affected me. I became curious to find out where all this soot came from and who to blame for it. It is interesting to note that 1997 was a year particularly bad year (for me at least) as I could remember all the grave tidings the TV brought: Princess Diana's sudden death, the beginnings of the Mahathir-Anwar Ibrahim saga, the Japanese Encephalitis epidemic, the return of Hong Kong to China and the Asian economic crisis. I believe 1997 was the turning point in my life where I officially became a consumer of news.

Now let's flashforward to 2001. I was sitting near the coffee table supposedly doing my Math homework when my eyes were actually fixed on the TV screen, watching my favourite show (I forgot what it was, but it started at 9 pm). Suddenly it was replaced by a special bulletin or 'Berita Khas' in Malay. I did know what to make of it since it never happened before. A mix of excitement and curiosity engulfed me for the first time in 4 years. The date was September 11th. Honestly, I could not believe my eyes when I saw a plane came crashing into one of te WTC towers. What I thought to be an accident was actually a terrorist attack on American soil. After 15 minutes, another special bulletin was aired and this time millions of cameras caught sight of a second plane crashing itself into the other tower. When CNN reported moments later that none other than Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda cohorts were responsible for the attacks, the first thing I thought about was "How could the FBI or CIA or whatever it's called so quick to find out who masterminded this plot?" From then on, I was a great fan of the post 9/11 controversy theories. One thing's for sure, 9/11 has certainly replaced 12/7 as the date that will live in infamy. The events that occured in both dates had something in common: the greatest army in the world set out in an honourable journey to exact their revenge upon those they deemed as the 'enemy'.

As the years past, my interest in news came from my eagerness to discover more about politics. My curiosity in politics grew daily partly because of the events that happened after 9/11 and also after I deepened my knowledge about history and its politics back then. I wanted to know all I could from the past so as to learn from other people's mistakes and be equipped with historical knowlege for the future. As George Santayana once said, "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it,"

In 2004-2005, most of my time was very much dedicated to the past. I borrowed plenty of books and after alot of choosing, the events that occured during World War II captured my heart. Well, nobody said I could not consume the news of the past! I skimmed through the great battles fought duing the bloody 6 year war but my interest was mainly in the politics that drove nations to war. National Socialism in Germany looked like the model government to rule over its population which was deeply affected by Great Depression and reeling from the aftermath of the Treaty of Versailles. As the Fuehrer Adolf Hitler placed blame on all Jews in Germany for her miseries, the masses which was so amenable to propaganda back then ensured that 6,000,000 Jews would be summarily murdered in later years. The then Minister for Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels once said to the German press, "Tell a lie enough times and it becomes the truth," Nazi Germany once planned to to carry out the Final Solution to the Jewish Question to "rid of all Jewish vermin" but the events that happened in recent past has proven that it has failed outright. The facts are these: instead of an extermination, survivors of the Holocaust propered in the Promised Land now called Israel. Because of the Holocaust, 50 years political unrest in the Middle East ensued with no sign of abating anytime soon. Without the Holocaust, perhaps it would have been a safer world today.

Back in the present, I became more aware about Malaysia's own past and how it helped shaped the country that it is today. Suffice to say, I was exposed to new terms like 'positive discrimination' and 'New Economic Policy'. Initially I was outraged to discover how much was done to ensure that all races 'played on a level playing field' and that the 'distribution of the economic pie was even' among all races. After piecing together the facts, however, I came to find out that without compromise and tolerance, the minority ethnic groups would not have survived till today.

But then again, I would rather not delve too much into only one topic or else life would be too mundane. I still do enjoy the finer things in life to keep my sanity, minus all the political fiasco that is occuring and the horrible things that are still happening worldwide. Keeping track with such news is important, but I find it useless to be obsessed over something you have no control of. That should not be mistaken for apathy, ever. Well, it's time to stop ranting about life and make way for more 'news-consuming' sessions. Yummy!

*searches for week's worth of newspapers*

Cheers,
Adrian

Hey guys, here's a collection of why I think girls everywhere should consider having guys who play DotA for boyfriends.

Great Concentration
1. A man whoplays DotA will pay alot of concentration in the game because he is in love with the game. This is good in the future as they would love their own choice of job. Plus, the sexiest manly moment comes when they are concentrating in doing something so you should find a chance to look at him while he is playing DotA then you will understand what I am saying is the truth.

Dont Give Up Easily
2. DotA players do not give up easily and it's the same spirit like athlete in sports. Besides that, they have the experience to resist failure for example DotA players tend to argue and scold each other noobs if you do not have that positive attitude to resist, you might already given up (applies in real life).
Guys who play DotA do not give up easily in real life too =D.

Gentlemen
3. In DotA no matter how badly you had been pawned and bullied, you must have the gentlemen attitude and accept the truth, game end, defeated, bullied, tortured, yet you have to say GG (Good Game). To be straightforward, DotA players are humble and careful which is a good requirement for choosing a husband =P

Very Patient
4. Extremely Patient-The game doesnt begin with a win, DotA players fight their best to earn a favourable situation by planning, farming, ganking or breaking towers, they need to slowly control the possession with patient n calamity in their mind. So choose a husband that is so patient la.. Can live forever with him peacefully

A Very Good Sandbag
5. Solid defending attitude- Every DotA players surely had been fully skilled and torture by their opponent before and surely had been torment to unavoidable death. Since they already know their fate, they still put on a smiling face. It means that it is great to have a boyfriend that you can scold and hit yet still smiling. So, if you wanna beat your partner, he will let you beat.

Very careful, Very Observant
6. Cause DotA is a game that must observe your surroundings so you can sense what your partner feels la.. and very considerate.

Alert & React Faster
7. DotA players response faster than you think, they are very alert. Their response are obviously faster compare to non-DotA players. So pick a guy that knows how to response spontaneously to be your life partner.. Not necessarily Jet Li or Jackie Chan but pick a guy that is smarter (DotA players =DD)

Good Knowledge In Handling Computers & Internet
8. You can randomly choose a DotA player and he will talk to you 3 days 3 nights from choosing a system unit to a mouse to a keyboard until how to operate it to the requirements required or keeping yourself up-to-date to the recent technology. In the future, surely computer and internet will dominate the world so choose a guy that knows how to operate computer and internet to be a husband else go out laugh by people.

Can Accept Shocking News Or Pressure Easily
9. No matter you are ready or not you will be gank by the enemies. Dunno when you will die out of sudden also. So every DotA players are not afraid of anything that suddenly occur to them. In life we always have problems and problems, if a man give up easily when facing a problem, do you still choose him as your life partner?

Good Planners
10. Knowing what to do every moment is the basic instinct a DotA player should be very good at. Means DotA players should know what to do always in planning, ganking, calculating opponent level and experience, watching their steps where they would appear next, spotting the enemy gathering spot and the way they attack. They will manage their life properly for example next day is your birthday party, should plan ahead and nicely. Next day go buy rice and also remember to buy sauce.

Know How To Earn Money
11. In DotA money is the main source of income, no money equals to no items, no items equals to no matter how you play also wasting time. So every DotA players also got a very good habit, earning money, after farming so hard to earn the money, finally can buy the item they want after saving it for so long, Sacred Relic (3800 gold). So find a DotA player, means finding a man who earn money and save it so your future will be very nice. At least husband earn, and wife spend.

Very Good In Resisting Beautiful And Sexy Gals.
12. When facing beautiful gals like Lina, you wont even give her a chance to seduce you, sending her to her base immediately. So find a DotA player, gals sure no need to worry, they are very loyal.

Teamwork
13. DotA players are willing to sacrifice themselves for the team. Sacrifice their lives in order to make sure their attacker earn money easily in the end. This kind of people in family or in society can think and care of others and do not have a selfish attitude.

In conclusion, not every DotA player can do very well for the points mentioned above but it does not mean they do not have the ability, is you have not discover and investigate the possibility. So give them more time, else you may regret for whole life. DotA is not only a sports or match for testing skills with opponent, it is also one of the important tool for a gal to choose their life partner. Choose a DotA player, it is the way to pursue happiness =DD

Hey readers,

Don't mind the title above. It's really just a gimmick. Sorry Loda. What I am about to share might seem cool to DotA players who don't know this already. It's pretty new to Malaysians anyway. Well, I'm sure most of you know the -water [red, green, blue] commands which allow players to change the colour of the river as they see fit.

Of course, IceFrog has enabled us to mix and match this 3 basic colours at our will. For instance, if you typed -water red or -water 255 0 255, you will get something like this:

The value you insert will determine the shade of the colour. The value 255 will result in the darkest shade of that colour. You can try the same thing for -water blue / -water 0 0 255 and -water green / -water 0 255 0.

Now for the fun part,

By mixing the the basic colours around, you get loads of cool colour effects. For instance, when I mix red and blue, I get a cool shade of violet ;). That's -water 233 0 233:

You can try playing around with colours yourself. If you're an expert using colour codes yourself, do drop a comment with the codes as I would like to use them during my games. :)

PS: If you don't want ANY colour at all, obviously to code to do that is -water 0 0 0. It's as if there is no water at all.

Cheers,

LaD

Hey guys,
I'm doing a Vox Pop AKA Public Interviews for college students. It's something asking any random college student a formulated question and get different opinions from different kinds of people. Now, I would like to get some suggestions from all of you college/uni attendants to provide me with an interesting/mind-boggling/sensitive question that is related to colleges in general.
I don't mean questions like "How would you feel if your college increased its fees by 50%?" I would get the same angry reactions!! So please use your creative minds and help me out here. TQ in
advance! ;)

Please provide me with:

1. Issue, related to colleges in general
2. Formulated question (1 question ask everyone)
3. Make sure this question can be asked to people of ANY races, gender, even age.
4. The question should straight-forward yet mind-challenging AND
5. The responses/answers I get should be diverse in nature, not all the same.

Cheers,
LaD

Hey all,

Well it seems my blog will be updated twice weekly over the weekends but I promise I'll compensate for that by posting gazillions of entries within a stretch of 48 hours. OK, first of all, I've got not one, not two, but THREE super-duper replays. All of them are in 1.21 so get your Switchers ready.

So here's the first game between The Planeswalkers (MtG) versus Team Nickey!

Download it here: http://replay.garena.com/view.php?id=4aab2862048c1

Comments

It was a really close game with some nice picks on either side. The Scourge (Nickey) had been dominating the game with its massive finishes during team fights. Based on our own experience, we decided to hang back and farm as much as possible and stalling their advances. As Lao Tzu once said: If all hopes of winning the battle seems lost, the wisest thing to do is run until the upper hand is gained. All in all, a really satisfying game for MtG as we won back with a fully farmed Kunkka.

PS: I'm Liliana ;)

Game 2: The Planeswalkers vs Team Invo (whom we lost to many times, I don't know why)

Download it here: http://replay.garena.com/view.php?id=4aab2a159e8d1

Comments

This was pretty much a stomp with us owning all the way with only minor sporadic resistance from the opposing team. We practised our strat alot and there was little room for them to breathe. This further strengthens my opinion that we shouldn't have lost so many drafts previously. Perhaps the draft jitters suffered by my mates back then made a difference.

Game 3: Veno vs Veno

Download it here: http://replay.garena.com/view.php?id=4aab2b8a07e4a

Comments

This is game where 2 different Veno playstyles have 2 very DIFFERENT results. Discover how to play those serpent wards to your advantage and that how fragile Venomous Gale really is.

PS: I'm the Veno on Sentinel

LaD

Hey dudes,

Alas, you got punk'd. Well, to those of you are familiar with Garena or otherwise, here's some JPEGS of Garenatians wear when they go camwhoring, partying, playing or use at pyjamas. So next time you won't feel surprised when you see the big bright G-dragon-like red emblem.

The black one is fan-made. Not OFFICIAL. Credits to babysiaozz for the design.

This is THE official one released by Garena HQ. By now they must have other designs but none were delivered to me =(

Cheers!

Hi readers,

I scored a 3.9 GPA for the past year. I just hope I can continue getting Dean's List for the coming year. This just goes to show being good in DotA doesn't mean your studies have to suffer. Of course I'm taking Journalism but then again Science students usually won't even bother playing the game long term.

I'm just so damn disappointed that I'm still not going anywhere in my quest to be or form a good team in Malaysia. I think I have some decent teammates, but no one is making the effort to be serious as I am, maybe because the payout isn't as grand as other games like CS or SC.

Anyway, my birthday's coming up on the 21st. I have allocated RM 300 to spend with my best buddies in a restaurant, courtesy of my mom. =) Stay tuned for that! Should be a great party!

Okay here's the latest replay for your viewing pleasure; http://replay.garena.com/view.php?id=4aa2083935264
